Artist branding

Artist branding is where an artist takes their personality and their music and creates a consistent visual style and identity unique to other artists. Hoping that the identity will allow people to relate to the artist and can gain a fan base who are obsessed with the artist and the music.

Billie Eilish has just under 100 million followers giving her a huge fan base. Her main followers are girls in their teens. These people relate to Billies whole persona not just her music. One of the many things Billie is known for her fashion and the clothes she wears. She is often pictured in baggy clothes and look oversized as she wants to show young people they can dress how they want and it shouldn't matter. She has been body shamed for wearing these clothes but has snapped back and tried to get the message out there that all bodies are different and beautiful and no one should be ashamed of their body. This is why so many young teens relate and like her as they go through the struggles Billie does. Billie acts like a role model for many young women which is why her fanbase is so strong. Billie Eilish has branded herself by doing charity work for animals and campaigning for younger people to register to vote. With her using her platform for good things makes her a great idol for her fanbase which is why she has such a strong and loving fanbase. Along with this she has had unique hairstyles in the past, unique merchandise. Billie is just a girl who loves making music, no fancy dresses or over the top make up looks, she is just like every other girl with a passion for music. She is a massive fan of the show 'the office' and even has sounds from the show in her songs. This allows the audience to relate to her as she is just a ordinary girl who enjoys ordinary things like 'the office' just like everyone else.

Another extremely popular artist who has branded himself over many years even from an extremely young age is Justin Bieber. With Just over 204 million followers on instagram he has been in the spotlight since he was 13 when he was found by his manager Scooter Braun who found him on YouTube. Justin Bieber's Fanbase is mostly the same as Billie Eilish with many teenage girls listening to his music. But this is for different reasons than Billie Eilish. The obvious reasons are because of his very popular catchy songs that the majority of people enjoy. He attracts his audience through various publicity stunts. For example in 2016 he slowly revealed small messages using graffiti across the world (In the picture below), teasing a possible new album. This entices the audience and makes them curious of new music that could be released. Justin Bieber has also gained lots of popularity through his personality and looks. Justin Bieber has been heavily sexualised by younger girls which is one of the main causes of his initial and overall popularity. He is seen as a stereotypical white male who fits the perfect poster role. He has branded himself through his looks, his songs and his talent with promoting.
